Work Out Without Working Out

Sometimes, the gym gets boring. Running in the park is no walk in the park. Your bike chain breaks. You just want to do something different to stay in shape.

Columbus is full of places to do different activities and sports without resorting to daily bikram yoga or extreme sports to get fit.

1. Climb the walls. Vertical Adventures offers indoor bouldering and rock climbing for all levels. One of the myths about indoor climbing is that you need upper body strength. Not true - you use your legs to push you up the wall rather than relying on your arms and shoulders to pull your body higher. Don't relax though - you will get the workout of your life and discover muscles you never thought you had. For $25, your first trip includes shoe rental and a climbing/equipment lesson. Subsequent visits will run $15 per person for shoes, harness, and chalk.

2. Shake it like a Polaroid picture. Ballet Met offers hip-hop dance classes for beginners (7:30-8:15pm Mondays) and intermediates (8:15-9:00pm Mondays). Ballet Met's offerings also include Flamenco, Tap, Jazz and Modern dance; they offer Pilates. Classes are $16 each or 12/$126.

3. Connect with your sensual side. There are a plethora of belly dancing studios in the city, and Laylia does one-day seminars and private/group lessons in the Grandview, OSU and downtown areas. Class passes are $15, with one month unlimited passes available. On the north side, Habeeba's offers beginning belly dance lessons at 8pm on Monday; one class is $25, and an 8-week course is $100.

4. Kick some tush. Martial arts runs the gamut, from intensive sports like taekwondo and kendo sword-handling to the gentle, focused movements of Tai chi. Kickboxing will kick your butt into shape and is offered at many martial arts studios and mainstream gyms. Most martial arts studios are kid-friendly, so you can do double duty getting fit and being a cool parent. Metro Martial Arts and Fitness offers karate, kickboxing and bootcamp classes. Koguryo Martial Arts offers Thang Soo Do (linear techniques) and Hap Ki Do (kicking techniques). The Columbus Center for Movement Studies offers Aikido, a non-violent type of martial art. Prices vary depending on the center, age/experience and class.

5. Jump, Jive and Wail. Ballroom dancing never goes out of style. The Columbus Dance Centre in Gahanna offers private lessons, and dance instruction from the Hustle to the Foxtrot. Many dance studios offer hip-hop and Latin-specific classes.
